Pre-Production

  1. Is your location quiet enough for sync sound? Listen for air conditioning, traffic, machinery, airplanes, voices.

  2. How are the acoustics of indoor spaces? Echoey spaces can be difficult.

  3. Are you planning long shots that will make a boom mic impractical?

  4. Will your actors be moving while delivering dialog? Will they be widely spaced when delivering dialog?

  5. Will the camera be moving? Dolly; handheld; documentary style?

  6. If body mics are required, can your actors be dressed in natural fibers to minimize clothing noise?

  7. Will AC power be available?

Production

  1. Film or video?

  2. Surround?

  3. Wireless mics?

  4. Wireless audio monitoring (Comrex)? How many receivers?

  5. On-set playback (e.g. music video)?

  6. Linear audio (DAT) or non-linear with metadata? What delivery format?

Post-Production

  1. Release format? Broadcast; DVD; Theatrical; Surround?

  2. Original or Stock Music? Post-scored? Do you need a guide track for editorial?

  3. ADR (looping)?

  4. Foley?

  5. Don’t finish your audio in the edit suite. Even if time or budget are tight, audio post-production makes a world of difference!
